I have been reading alot about it being better to use vector files for printing.

i.e I have been using Photoshop psd to produce stationery designs, but is it better to use say illustrator are it creates vector images/ designs ?

What I’ve read is that vectors are not suited to photographic images, if this is so how is it useful for say designing a leaflet or brochure. So if the print graphics are say a mixture of both text shaped background and several photographs, won’t the photo quality be lost with a vector ?

Finally should I be using Illustrator to create printable designs rather than Photoshop?

Okay this one takes a little explaining… Heres the deal. First you have to understand the difference between Photoshop and Illustrator:

Photoshop – is a "bitmap" image processing and manipulation program. It’s ideally suited for creating, modifying and outputting digital images of a photographic nature, which share a common fundamental structure: pixels in a bitmap.

Illustrator – Illustrator is a vector-based postscript drawing program. Its used to create high quality print material. It functions by generating curved paths (Bezier curves) connected by modifiable anchor points. These anchors, with their handles are ultimately editable, and never "leave" the structure of the file. A vector based drawing program creates the various elements of the image as individual vector objects which retain their characteristics and do not become part of a "bitmap".

Fundamental difference: Illustrator generates "vector objects" which are not part of a "bitmap"

So to answer your final question: Yes, use Illustrator instead of Photoshop when makeing printable designs. Also keep in mind, many print companies use Adobe InDesign for things like brochures, postcards etc.

Scrye quit. Someone told me there was an official MTG magazine that ran a price guide in it, but the only one I could find was Beckett, which has also stopped printing. Does anyone know of any other printed magazines with price guides for Magic the Gathering cards? (Not looking for online sources of card pricing info – I can’t easily carry those in my trade binder…)

There are no printed price guides anymore. You will just have to print out a price guide off the internet.

The size is a 5 by 5 square and there are 8 pages front and back. Every website I’ve found has only had a certain size you can print……
