How do i tell the difference between a variable cost and a semi variable cost?

I have been given a list of costs and have to classify them as fixed, variable and semi-variable. I know the fixed ones. But how do i tell what is variable or semi variable? If semi variable, does that mean they have a fixed element? Say for example i have some leaflets printed for a business, and the printer says that they charge £50 outright and then 10p per leaflet, would that be semi variable?

Yes, you are definitely right. Semi-variable costs contain a fixed cost portion. Most costs in the real world are semi-variable. Think about cell phones. Even though you pay per month (Variable Cost), you must make a one time purchase of the cell phone (Fixed Cost).
