Get a great EDC blade for $17? Yes, it’s possible. I’ve covered some other great options in TNP “knife show” but now you can add the excellent CRKT Drifter to the mix. As of 2009, this blade is offered in either a stainless steel framelock or lighter weight G10 version. Featuring a 2.9 inch 8Cr14Mov blade, the knife has proven itself as a good EDC utility knife in my carry. Disappointingly, the out-of-box edge for both knives is embarrassingly dull and it will need some sharpening TLC to bring it to life. But the slight recurve and good belly in the blade shape offer good cutting ability despite perhaps the somewhat thick blade stock. Other upsides include fast deployment, tight lockup, good looks, excellent fit and finish, pillar construction, purposeful jimping, strong pocket clip, and (with the SS version) a very strong lock. Some downsides will include heavier carry weights compared to the competition (3.2 oz SS, 2.4 oz G10) and a non-transferrable pocket clip stuck in the (ugh) tip-down carry configuration. Nevertheless, it’s impressive to have two handle options in this affordable little blade and even more impressive that both come in under $20 (subject to change of course!). /////////////////// Nutnfancy Likeability Scale: 7 out of 10

The performance saga of the Cold Steel Pocket Bushman continues and ends in this Nutnfancy evaluation of the blade. TNP crew hiked into the mountains with Allie the Mountain for some blade testing. The Pocket Bushman, with re-designed locking bar, came along as part of its ongoing test by me (another round satisfactorily completed at another location in August 2009). The new locking bar was satisfactory but it turns out the PB has a nasty surprise in store for us which made it a moot point. Sold as a hard use folder it’s fair to test its capabilities in that. It couldn’t cope. So if it can only function as a camp or utility knife, then its 6.2 oz weight, cumbersome lock mechanism (very much so compared to other one-hand, non hand-pinching folders), and slick hot/cold transmitting SS handle become detriments, not assets. For now, this concludes my interest in the blade. I still like many Cold Steel products, just not this one. //////////////////////////// Nutnfancy Likeability Scale: 0 out of 10

A Sage is someone wise in judgment and experience. It’s reasonable assuming they achieved that title through trial, error and extending their best effort at every opportunity. If that definition can be applied to something tangible it would be an item created from experience and striving for quality and performance at the highest level. If said item were a pocketknife we could call it a Sage. The C123 Sage represents Spyderco’s 30-year pledge to knife crafting and learning to make better knives at every available opportunity. The plan is to offer an ongoing series of Sage Folders with many of the different and ingenuous locking devices and mechanisms the knife industry has to offer. This model is in recognition of knifemaker Chris Reeve’s efforts and contributions to the folding knife industry and are honored to create a Sage in his honor. The Spear-Point shaped CPM-S30V blade is flatground and is a coalescence of Spyderco’s Caly3 and Native models in shape and function. The handle is all screw construction 6A14V titanium. Inside are phosphor bronze washers for smooth open/close. A silhouette wire clip snugs down deeply in a pocket and adjusts for left/right-hand carry. Jimping covering the spine and finger choil stop slipping and sliding.

The current Cold Steel Pocket Bushman is a broken design. Cold Steel highly touts its Ram Safe® locking system (powered by a “strong compression spring”) and provides us with convincing copy and pictures to prove the point. But sometimes reality can provide a harsh wakeup call as it did in my own casual study and initial use of the Pocket Bushman. First some background on the mechanism: for actuation in either direction, extraction of this locking bar via the provided 550 cord lanyard is necessary. The spring is strong and a fair amount of pulling force is required to unlock the blade, whether closed or open. If the user pulls the bar out too far, which is easy to do, the entire locking bar comes out from underneath the blade hilts, ejects itself from the handle, and can irreparably bend/kink the compression spring. This is what happened to my knife. At this point the knife, at least as designed, will be non-functional. The spring kink will prevent re-assembly of the locking bar and further (normal) use of the knife. This is currently a fatal flaw in an otherwise high value and seemingly strong knife. A locking bar retention mechanism needs to be immediately applied to the design. For a knife thats touted to be nearly as strong as fixed blade design, this is a glaring disappointment and it is shocking to me this eventuality was not identified in testing. Should this flaw be rectified, then the Pocket Bushman could stand out as a high value design with many positive features: perfectly shaped and sized 4116 Krupp SS clip blade, good carry clip, thin carry profile, a dual good thumbstud, and a reasonable cost. Regardless of lock improvements though, downsides will include a heavier carry weight (6.1 0z), a handle that conducts all cold and hot to the users hands, and the necessity for two-handed deployment. But as it stands, Nutnfancy does not recommend this knife on any level until it is fixed. /////////////Nutnfancy Likeability Scale: 0 of 10

Cold Steel XL Voyager has an ergonomic handle that’s oval shaped with great triangular patterned zytel scales and an extra long handle that gives you extra room if using the knife while wearing gloves. Easy to conceal because of the handle design which tapers towards the end of the handle disguising the knife as a regular sized folder. Pocket clip is really tight which grips the zytel scales so tight that will cause some wear and tear on your pants. See nutnfacy’s knife modification video which shows you how to fix that problem. The Voyager has a HUGE hollow ground 5 Clip Point blade, VG-1 steel (one of the best steels that i have encountered with my experience)and weighs a super lightweight of 5.1 oz, Which is unbeatable, because there are few folding knives that give you a five inch blade and such a low weight. Clipped shaped blades will still penetrate and slice extremely well while still tackling all kinds of utility tasks with ease. The tip does look a little weak but most clip shaped blades suffer from a potentially weak tip because of the blade design. Since the handle is so long you can get more reach if you grip the knife towards the base of the handle giving you 2 more inches of reach, which totals out to 7″ of reach which is great if you are using the knife strictly as a tactical knife. The voyager has an excellent deployment stud, most of the weight is in the blade making it easy to deploy by just shaking the blade out Lock up is great! Although the pinned construction prevents disassembly and maintenance. (May get loose with time and heavy use.)For its reasonable cost Large blade and outstanding weight, there are very few tactical folders out there that give you the size and feel of a fixed blade knife in a folding knife.
